President's message
CSEA siblings,
The unexpected, by its very definition, includes almost limitless possibilities.
It can bring joy and happiness, like when running into an old friend or finding a $20 bill in a jacket pocket.
It can also bring immense pain and unimaginable loss, as so many are facing in the wake of the devastating wildfires in southern California.
Whether you have lost personally or have felt the effects of their destruction, either through loved ones, coworkers, or your worksite being affected, my heart and my thoughts are with you.
These horrific events come just as we turn our attention to Have-a-Heart month in February, when we highlight the Dorothy Bjork Assistance Fund. While donations are accepted year-round, February is when we elevate the fund and the vital service it provides to our CSEA siblings in need.
Through the Humanitarian Assistance Program, members can apply for up to $500 in one-time relief for expenses like unexpected bills or relocation costs. Under the Emergency Assistance Program, members whose homes have suddenly become uninhabitable can apply for up to $1,000 in immediate aid.
The Dorothy Bjork Assistance Fund is comprised solely of donations, and applications are reviewed solely by member volunteers on the Humanitarian Committee.
These two programs under the Dorothy Bjork Assistance Fund are a lifeline for CSEA siblings going through the most difficult times in their lives and can mean the difference between keeping the lights on and water running for a family, or even keeping a roof over their heads.
I am proud to share that CSEA Member Benefits provider American Fidelity recently made a very generous donation to the Assistance Fund to help members who have been affected by the devastating fires. Their contribution is a testament to the power of partnership and the unwavering support our members can count on in times of need.
If you are among the many members who have been displaced by the Los Angeles County area fires, or if you are experiencing unexpected hardship of any kind, please know that your CSEA union siblings are here for you. Simply go to csea.com/assistance to apply for help.
And if you have never donated to the fund, I encourage you to make this February the month you lift up one of your CSEA siblings in their time of need. Every dollar donated will contribute directly to helping members in need.
In the midst of one of the most destructive events our state has seen, let’s make sure our affected union siblings and their families have a place to turn for help.
In Solidarity,
Adam Weinberger, Association President
