Troy Johnson Sworn in to CalPERS Board
Troy Johnson was officially sworn in as a member of the CalPERS Board of Administration on Tuesday, January 20th, assuming the at large Seat B and beginning a new chapter of service on behalf of California’s public employees and retirees.
Johnson joins the CalPERS board at a critical moment, as the nation’s largest public pension fund continues to navigate market volatility while safeguarding the retirement security of more than two million members. His appointment brings a strong voice for working people and a deep understanding of the responsibility that comes with stewarding public retirement funds.
“It is truly an honor to serve on the CalPERS Board of Administration,” Johnson said. “This board makes decisions that directly affect the retirement security of millions of public employees and their families. I take that responsibility seriously, and I am committed to being a thoughtful, accountable, and member focused trustee. I am deeply grateful to the CSEA members, retirees, and staff who worked so hard to help make this possible. This victory belongs to them.”
Association President Adam Weinberger praised Johnson’s dedication and readiness to serve.
“Troy Johnson understands that retirement security is not abstract. It is about dignity, stability, and peace of mind for working people who have devoted their careers to public service,” Weinberger said. “We know Troy will bring integrity, common sense, and a clear commitment to members as he serves on the CalPERS Board.”

Johnson will also serve alongside fellow CSEA member Kevin Palkki, who represents active school members on the CalPERS Board of Administration. Palkki welcomed Johnson as a partner in advancing the interests of school employees and all CalPERS members.
“I am excited to serve alongside Troy on the CalPERS board,” Palkki said. “Having another trustee who understands the realities facing school employees strengthens our collective voice. Troy’s perspective and commitment to members will be an asset to this board and to everyone who relies on CalPERS.”
As an at large board member, Johnson represents a broad cross section of CalPERS membership, including state employees, school employees, and retirees. His role includes overseeing the administration of benefits, setting policy direction, and ensuring the long term health of the pension system.
Johnson emphasized the importance of collaboration and transparency as he begins his term.
“The strength of CalPERS comes from the trust our members place in this system,” Johnson said. “I look forward to working with my fellow board members to protect that trust and to make decisions that reflect the values and needs of the people we serve.”
With his swearing in complete, Johnson officially takes his seat on the CalPERS Board of Administration, ready to help guide one of the most important public pension systems in the world.
