President's message

CSEA siblings,
February is often described as the month of the heart, and for good reason. It is a time when we are reminded to slow down, look out for one another, and recognize the quiet acts of care that hold our communities together. At CSEA, that spirit is not seasonal. It is who we are.
The stories featured in this issue of Focus reflect the heart of our union in action. The cover story celebrates members who stepped forward in moments of crisis not because recognition was expected, but because helping others is simply what they do. Whether it was responding to a dangerous situation on a campus, putting out a fire to protect sleeping children, saving a student who was choking, or reuniting a lost toddler with their family, these actions speak volumes about the character of CSEA members.
CSEA siblings Myke Lucero, Ruby Shaw, Regino Gonzalez, Ryan Branson, Raymundo Bueno, Yvette Flores, Alex Cruz, Vince Gonzales, and Silvia Clark are powerful reminders that heroism often looks like showing up, staying calm, and putting others first. These members did not hesitate. They acted with care, courage, and compassion: values that define classified school employees across California every single day.
That same commitment to service and leadership is reflected in the other stories you will read in this issue. For the first time in our state's history, two former CSEA members are now leading both chambers of the California Legislature. Their leadership is a testament to the fact that classified employees are not only essential to our schools, but to the future of our state.
We also celebrate Troy Johnson being sworn in as a member of the CalPERS Board. Troy’s journey from CSEA member to statewide leader reinforces something we know well: when classified employees have a seat at the table, decisions are stronger, more grounded, and more reflective of the people who keep our public institutions running.
At every level, from classrooms and bus routes to the halls of the Capitol and CalPERS boardroom, CSEA members lead with heart. That is why we continue to support one another through efforts like the Dorothy Bjork Assistance Fund, ensuring that when a member is facing hardship, they are never alone.
As you read this issue, I hope you feel the pride I feel in our members. Pride in their courage. Pride in their leadership. Pride in their compassion. This is the heart of CSEA, and it beats strong because of you.
In Solidarity,

Adam Weinberger, Association President
