COVID-19 Memoriam

CSEA offers support to families of COVID victims

CSEA members work tirelessly and passionately for the students and families they serve, and this dedication hasn’t stopped amid a global pandemic. In fact, they have continued to keep facilities clean, provide meals, support instruction, supply the technology tools needed for the 6.2 million students across the state of California to receive a high-quality education and more, even from a distance.

Tragically, more than 40 members have reportedly passed away due to COVID-19.

The Member Benefits department is seeking information for members who have died due to COVID-19 for two reasons.

First and foremost is to make sure the families get as much support as they need from the union and that no benefits they are entitled to go unclaimed. When a member passes, CSEA ensures the family receives any insurance benefits due to them, or that they’re entitled to. They also reach out to CalPERS on the family’s behalf to make sure the death benefit from their CalPERS pension is given to the designated family member.

Additionally, because of the massive scope of how many members have been affected by this pandemic, the Conference Committee wants to make sure that the “In Memoriam” featured every year for conference recognizes our members lost to this pandemic.

If you know a member who has died because of the coronavirus, email the following information to memberbenefits@csea.com:

  • The name of the member who has passed
  • What chapter they were with
  • Their family’s contact information, if available
  • Your information, if follow up is needed
