CSEA Grants and Scholarships Inspire Members
Member Career Grant Winners, Scholarship Program Announcements
When you’re committed to furthering the education of others, your own education can sometimes become secondary. But CSEA’s commitment to members provides post-secondary scholarships, grants, subsidies, and financial assistance for those in pursuit of their educational goals.
“Some applicants have returned to school after learning there is financial help out there. Even if it’s just for a laptop or a semester of books, every bit counts when pursuing a degree,” said Lori Louie of Milpitas Chapter 281, who sits on the CSEA Scholarship Committee.
“Scholarship winners encourage other CSEA families to continue their education by sharing information about the CSEA scholarships available to them.”
For decades, CSEA members and their dependents have benefitted from CSEA and Union Plus (AFL-CIO) scholarships and grants, including Member Career Grants (MCG) and subsidies.
With these small one-time grants and scholarships, CSEA members can receive help with paying for the increasing financial costs of higher education while reinforcing the profound belief in themselves that a post-secondary education is indeed possible.
“Many of us are the lowest paid in our districts but our work is as important as the administrator making three times more than us,” Louie said.
“A paraeducator can become a teacher, a custodian can become the director, and a health clerk can become the district nurse. We have the skills and the knowledge but may lack that degree. Higher education can get you to that higher position.”

“A paraeducator can become a teacher, a custodian can become the director, and a health clerk can become the district nurse. We have the skills and the knowledge but may lack that degree. Higher education can get you to that higher position.” Though scholarships and grants play a small role in how recipients accomplish their educational goals, CSEA has always believed in helping members and their families navigate the intimidating demands of higher education. Especially when books, school supplies, and class fees stand in the way. For decades, CSEA has awarded nearly $135,000 to help members and their dependents aspire for more. Because while classified workers work every day to help make the education of others possible – now is the time to focus on yours. “I am currently enrolled in the credential program at UMass Global. As a first-generation student whose parents were immigrants, education is very important,” said Sandy Prak of Ceres Chapter 140, who was awarded a $1,000 Member Career Grant to pursue a teaching credential and master’s degree in education. “I am passionate about teaching and working with children. I believe that these students are our future. My goal is to work in a low-income school and provide students with quality education.” This year, 45 members were awarded career grants of $1,000 each and 45 member dependents will receive $1,000 scholarships later this year. For those who applied for the national AFL-CIO Union Plus scholarships, winners are also expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
