CSEA brothers and sisters support each other during fires

When Dorothy Bjork first created the CSEA Assistance Fund in the mid-1980s to care for our members, it's unlikely she could have predicted what 2020 would look like. In a year already full of heartbreak and isolation, devastating wildfires have now begun to consume the homes and land of our members. What feels like an eternity ago now, we were told to shelter at home for safety, but now for some, home isn’t even safe.

“More than 25,000 members are living in areas affected by the fires, blazing up and down the state of California.”

More than 25,000 members are living in areas affected by the fires, blazing up and down the state of California. CSEA always keeps our members' needs front and center. In fact, during a recent text message campaign, staff from different departments, led by Member Benefits, came together to reach out to 18,000 members with cell phone numbers on file.

While most of us cannot imagine the heartbreak of losing a family home, the stories members share with us leave an imprint. These losses don’t fall on deaf ears. The generosity of our members is proof positive that we are a family that supports each other during our greatest time of need. In fact, during the text campaign from August 20-26, members contributed nearly $18,000 to the Dorothy Bjork Assistance Fund.

From June 2018 through 2019, CSEA assisted more than 500 members with $335,630. The majority of support provided was for victims of the Camp fire along with the large Carr, Mendocino Complex and Holy fires.

This year, our members need more help than ever before. No contribution is too small. The Assistance Fund relies solely on member donations and every dollar goes directly to help a member in need. So please, open your hearts and give what you can because every time you give, we get to respond to one of those applications by saying, “Your union brothers and sisters are here for you.”
